Emergency Preparedness

This section provides preparedness information for a variety of conditions. Please thoroughly review this information.  Fully understanding an emergency allows you to take the necessary steps to be prepared for the emergency should it happen.
 

 Before a Disaster:

  • Learn the hazards for your area
  • Purchase insurance, including flood insurance
  • Develop plans for what to do
  • Assemble a disaster supply kit

 Benefits of Being Prepared:

  • Being prepared reduces, fear, anxiety, & losses that accompany disasters
  • Local officials and disaster relief agencies will attempt to help, but you need to be ready to take care of yourself for at least 72 hours (3 days)

 Know Your Child’s School Emergency Plan:

  • How will the school communicate with families during an emergency
  • Is the school prepared to shelter in place if need be and where do they plan to go if they need to evacuate

 Plan for Pet Needs:

  • Identify pet friendly shelters
  • Gather pet supplies
  • Ensure you pet has proper ID and up to date veterinarian records
  • Obtain a pet carrier and leash
  • Keep in mind that pets are not allowed in most emergency shelters as they might affect the health and safety of other occupant

 


 Family Communications:

  • Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan how you will contact each other
  • Complete a contact card for each family member and keep them handy

 Special Needs:

  • Because of medical or physical conditions, you or members of your household may need assistance in an evacuation.  To plan for your transportation and shelter needs, local emergency management officials ask that you register with them.  All information is kept confidential.  Register Here.
